Are There Any Side Effects of Reiki?

If you are a very fragile patient, you may wish to turn to a complementary form of healthcare in addition to receiving medical treatment. One option is to use Reiki, a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. However, you may wonder if these techniques come with any side effects.

What to Expect From Reiki

A Reiki practitioner uses a technique known as "laying on of hands." The belief is that the practitioner is able to pass energy from themselves to the recipient and the practitioner is also able to remove negative energy. While it is a spiritual practice, the recipient of Reiki does not have to adhere to the belief system to receive the treatment.

Reiki is used often by those who are suffering from chronic pain, fibromyalgia, depression, and chronic fatigue. However, it is not a medical treatment and should be used in combination with any medical treatments that you may receive from a licensed physician.

Your Reiki Treatment

When you are receiving the Reiki treatment, you are able to remain fully clothed. You may be seated or in a lying position. The hands are not placed directly on you but instead hover slightly above you. Some Reiki practitioners are licensed and are allowed to touch you if both you and the Reiki practitioner decide that this is the best option.

The Reiki practitioner will use several hand positions to make sure that each area of your body is reached. Typically, the palm is down and the fingers are extended.

Side Effects of Reiki Attunement

After a Reiki attunement, you may notice one of the following sensations:

  • Heat
  • Coolness
  • Tingling
  • Buzzing

These usually occur in your hands and feet and are temporary. You may also feel intense emotion that results from emotions that were previously suppressed. These emotions eventually vanish. You will simply need to allow these emotions to pass through you.

You may also experience a headache or stomach ache as a result of the toxins that were stored in your body that are released. Make sure to eat a good meal and drink plenty of water to mitigate these effects.

The Spiritual Experience of Reiki

After your first experience with Reiki, you might undergo a spiritual experience. You may feel more open to new spiritual experiences. You may also feel as if you want a radical change in your life. For example, you may feel like you need a career change after receiving the treatment from a Reiki practitioner.
