3 Reasons You May Be Experiencing Eye Discomfort

If you are dealing with itchy, burning eyes, you might be wondering what is causing the problem and what you can do to treat it. The treatment completely depends on the reason for the itchy eyes. Here are some reasons you might have eye discomfort and what you can do to treat the problem.

1. Allergies

One of the most common reasons for eye discomfort is allergies, especially seasonal allergies. If you are allergic to pollen, some kind of plant, or even pets, you will notice that your eyes hurt and itch when you are around your allergen.

If you are dealing with, allergies you will have the eye discomfort with other symptoms. Some of these symptoms include an itchy throat and/or tongue, running nose, rashes, and even swelling around the eyes. The best way to treat allergies are with an over-the-counter allergy medication. It will take a couple days for the medication to take effect, so give yourself some time and don't give up on a medication until you have tried it for some time. In addition, you can get eye drops with antihistamines in them to help provide relief specifically for the eyes.

2. Dry Eye

Another reason that a lot of people experience discomfort is because of dry eye. Dry eye is a condition where you don't have enough lubricant in your eyes, so they become red, inflamed, and itchy. You might also experience blurred vision or the feeling that you have dirt or sand in your eye.

Dry eye can be caused by allergies or different medications, so you might need to treat both allergies and dry eye. With dry eye you need to add lubricant to your eye with an over-the-counter eye drop. Make sure the eye drop has active ingredients for lubrication and not just artificial tears.

3. Conjunctivitis

Lastly, you could have an infection in your eye. Even if you have allergies or dry eye, you might get an infection if you are touching your eyes and getting bacteria in them. Conjunctivitis is exhibited by red eyes and intense itching. You might experience pain, but for the most part the eyes will itch and the skin around the eye will become very red, as well as the eye itself. If you have an eye infection that goes untreated, it could become serious and even compromise your eyesight. This is not a problem that should be ignored.
